Gang-ZhengThe American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) elected Dr. Gang Zheng to its College of Fellows for “outstanding contributions on activatable photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and discovery of porphysome nanotechnology in cancer imaging and therapy.”

Joining the College of Fellows puts Zheng among some elite company.

Zheng is Professor, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, and Department of Medical Biophysics, University of Toronto, Senior Scientist, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Core Lead, Techna Institute for the Advancement of Technology for Health (Techna), University Health Network.

The porphysome nanotechnology developed by Zheng has two applications. It can be used an imaging probe to detect cancer cells in conjunction with an MRI or PET scanner and its ability to absorb light allows it to be used in a type of therapy called focal ablation. Some of Zheng’s research has been funded by OICR through the Smarter Imaging Program.

Joining the College of Fellows puts Zheng among some elite company. According to the AIMBE, the College comprises the top two per cent of medical and biological engineers in the U.S. and Canada. Zheng will be formally inducted at a ceremony held during AIMBE’s 25th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on April 4, 2016.
